Owczarek Nizinny
The lovely Polish herdingdog
The pon is a Polish Lowland Shepherd dog.
In Sweden there are about 350-400 pons.
Originally the pon was used as a guard-dog
and as a
capable shepherd.
The pon is a
medium-sized, well-muscled and robust dog.
Its movements are
free. Pons
race over the ground with
their fur
flying beautifully.
A pon should give a compact impression with
a height/length ratio of 9:10.
The tail can both be short,
long or absent.
The coat is long and dense, with a thick
woolly undercoat and a
hardy
top coat. All colours are
permitted. Owning a pon means
considerable
grooming as the
coat doesn't take care of
itself - it needs brushing
weekly and sometimes more often. The
dog does not need to take a
bath very often as it is kept clean by the
brushing.
What is a pon like?
The pon is a social and friendly family dog with
a strong and well-balanced
personality. He
is happiest living in the thick of family-life.
Pons are
active dogs with
a great deal of curiosity
and can prove to be very
self-
reliant. They are known to have
very good memories.
A pon-pup needs to be raised with rules and clear
boundaries. A pon needs
a leader and
has to know its place in the pack.
A pon loves to run
free. It needs
a normal amount of exercise and
generally
likes all sorts of weather. A pon likes to play and
can easily be tought tricks.
Toys are often popular with pons.
